There are fears that poor snow coverage on many slopes could encourage skiers to venture off-piste onto potentially dangerous runs.

However, many skiers may be unaware that

going off piste may affect their travel insurance, as specific terms and conditions apply. American Express Travel Insurance has confirmed that its package covers experienced skiers and snowboarders who venture off the main slopes without a guide and also provides protection for less experienced skiers as long as they are supervised.

Skiers who hit the slopes without the correct cover for off piste may find themselves liable for any medical or repatriation costs incurred, American Express warns.

Joanne Field, marketing manager, American Express Travel Insurance advises:

"Patchy conditions have been a problem in Europe this season and could tempt holidaymakers to flout rules. "Last year there were twice as many accidents in the French Alps than the year before, so we would encourage everyone to ski or board wisely and obtain appropriate travel insurance cover before they depart." The cost off an airlift directly off the slopes can be as much as £2,000 and every year 50,000 skiers and snowboarders have to be rescued from the French Alps, the primary ski destination for Brits
