Millions of Britons need to check their home insurance policy to discover whether or not they are underinsured, a new report has revealed.
Research conducted for Tesco Home Insurance found that 34 per cent of people have never read their policy document, so have no idea whether or not they have sufficient cover.
It also found that 41 per cent of people were aware of the maximum contents cover on their home insurance policy, but had no indication whether it was actually enough to replace the possessions they were insuring.
Another group risking disappointment in the event of having to make a home insurance claim are the 36 per cent
of consumers who did not know whether their policy's individual item limit would be enough to replace an expensive purchase.
Allan Burns, head of Tesco Home Insurance, encouraged customers to take action now, rather than risk disappointment in the event of a claim.
He said: "We would urge all homeowners to read through their documents to familiarise themselves with the terms and conditions of the policy they have purchased. If they are unsure of any points, they should contact their insurer for clarification."
A recent report by insurer Swinton estimated that six million households risk losing everything by not having any form of home insurance cover.
With a Kwik-Fit Insurance home insurance policy, contents cover will increase by ten per cent 30 days before and after your wedding.
